The latest diesel cars can take on gasoline engined cars and come out on top!All turbocharged diesels generate much more torque than gasoline engines, so you get better mid-range acceleration. The Diesel Engine was invented by a man named Rudolf Diesel and among both internal and external combustion engines; the diesel engine is by far the most efficient.
So what really is the difference between the two types of engine? The simplest answer is that they ignite the fuel differently - a gasoline engine would ignite the fuel via a spark, where as in a diesel engine the fuel is ignited via a combustion process of temperature and pressure. It wouldn't be entirely wrong to say that the diesel engine has a comparatively simpler ignition process as it does not need to go through an intricate electronic process to spark the ignition. Having said that, they do have a more elaborate fuelling system as it needs to run at a much higher pressure and therefore needs to be heavier and bigger in size as well. Another reason why the diesel engine is comparatively more expensive and tends to be a lot heavier than its counterpart the gasoline engine is because its cylinder capacity needs to be greater so that it can create a sufficient amount of power - that's is why diesel engines have always been a favourite among the larger vehicles - however, as mentioned above, it is now also looked at as a viable option for the more conventional sized vehicles.
According to reports, the diesel and gasoline tandem would provide a 25% increase in fuel efficiency on the vehicle. As of now, Chrysler is making use of its 2.4liter twin-turbocharged four-cylinder engine for this. The mpg rating of this engine is then compared to Chryslers 4.0liter V6 engine installed on the companys minivan which has a similar power level with the four-cylinder engine.
What makes this engine unique is that it uses diesel and gasoline simultaneously. The engine has three fuel injectors per cylinder wherein two of these will use gasoline while the other one would be using diesel. The diesel would enable the engine to run at a higher compression ration thereby improving fuel economy. However, this engine needs two turbochargers intended for both high pressure and low pressure.
